Artist's Description
My rendition of the Oregon Grape, Oregon's State Flower was commissioned to promote the 2009 Glide Wildflower Show, the premiere Wildflower Show held annually since 1965.
As in all my art, I was not content to merely reproduce an image of the plant. I wanted to give this flower the attention it deserves. After becoming familiar with the anatomy of the plant, I designed the holly shaped leaves as a backdrop for the cluster of buds beginning to open. I pushed the colors in the leaves. Rarely do we take the time to really notice all the intricate details of smaller flowers; especially when they are tiny buds in masses of color that are usually viewed merely as patches of color.
About Sandi Whetzel
Sandi developed a "do-it-yourself" attitude during her teens when she couldn't afford luxuries. She fabricated her wardrobe and then her home decor after she married. Mesmerized by PBS TV art demo shows, Sandi painted some of her hand-fashioned garments. When the couple purchased new furniture, wall art was not in their budget. Recalling the PBS art shows and her fabric painting, Sandi passionately plunged into oil painting, learning by trial and error. Sandi's self-guided art experiments blossomed with four years of instruction from a talented community college art instructor, Bonnie Hill, of Roseburg, OR.
